Nicky Nu

DOMAIN

This domain was purchased on March 22nd, 2008 from Name Cheap and is hosted at Dreamhost. For a while now (and I mean a while) I’ve been going obsessive about wanting to have a domain that shouted ME.. I am crazy and get all obsessive if my layout doesn’t match my domain name… SO, I figured there was no better way to solve this issue then to get a domain name with my name (or in this case nickname.) Now I can have anything I want on my layout.. because anything I like, anything I am, is me.

Nicole-related domain names were few and far between, though. In fact, the only name I could find that would not require that I add numbers — I actually did buy a name with a number in it earlier on, but later decided I really hated it — was nicky.nu. And that’s the story of how nicky.nu came to be. Of course, I probably would have preferred it “Nicki” — BUT — “Nicky” was how I used to spell it until everyone else and their mothers started spelling it “Nicki” .. then I just got used to spelling it that way, and “Nicky” went away (to a small uncharted island, or so I hear.)

Site Name

Well, it’s my nickname, and for a long time I have wanted a “my name” domain. Finally I made that happen. Although nu domains are expensive, I thought having a domain name that I’d really enjoy was worth it.

Purpose

The reason I run this site (and other sites) is because firstly I enjoy it. I like creating graphics and coding layouts. It’s not only fun but also a learning experience. I enjoy learning new design techniques and bettering myself. I like having a little place online that I can ramble about things on my mind. Sometimes I want somewhere to vent, and sometimes I just want somewhere to babble about nothing in particular. I also like the idea of keeping a record of things in my life and then being able to look back on them.

History

I’ve been with so many places. I started out when I was in 7th or 8th grade. I jumped from free server to free server. None really suited my needs so I didn’t stay long. I’ve been with places such as Livejournal, Deadjournal, Greatest Journal (Lots of live journal spawns), Xagna, Woohoo, Blogger.. There were really far too many to list.

I really got my start at kiwibox.com. They use their own coding and not regular HTML, so this really taught me the basics in layout making. I enjoyed blogging a lot. I was happy once I got the hang of how to make my own layouts. I also spent quite a lot of time at Diaryland and Diary-x and Melodramatic, but I wasn’t fully happy with them.

Then in 2004, I really wanted to get a domain. After much persuasion and bugging I finally was allowed to buy my own domain. So on May 23rd, 2004 I picked the name, quirkiness.net I was hosted at Netrilluim. I only had 100 MBs of space and 6 Gbs of bandwidth which was one reason I wanted to get a bigger plan at a different place. It was awesome owning a domain. I have learned so much more since my beginning internet years. After that I purchased lord-voldemort.org (which is now a site dedicated for Voldemort). After that came parseltongue.org. I loved the name but decided I wanted a new domain name that reflected some of my other loves. That’s when, on August 1st, I purchased howlatthemoon.org. Again, I loved this domain name, but my obsessive personality got in the way and I needed a domain that was really ME.

Thank goodness for paint programs. I started out with Paint Shop Pro 8. I didn’t like it so much but it allowed me to do more than I could before. Then I received a godsend, Adobe Photoshop 7.0. It has been great and I’ve gotten much better because of it.
