Food For Thought.

I had a random thought the other day while I was eating homemade chocolate covered pretzels.

People risk their lives everyday. Just leaving the house is a risk. But my thought wasn’t about that, really (although I did start thinking on it, after a while.) My thoughts were focussed on food. After I devoured one of those yummy morsels I stopped for a few seconds and thought about the risks that I, and other people, take with consuming food, everyday. How do we know what we are eating, really? How do we know that the food we eat isn’t contaminated with some invisible bacteria, or that that new restaurant (or even that old restaurant) in town isn’t going to have something on its menu that one of us out there is deathly allergic to? I guess all of these food recalls of late are causing people to become more aware and more wary about what they buy, but that can only do so much good.

When I read about all of the pet food recalls it made me not even want to buy pet food anymore. If I could I would switch my Ferrets to an au naturale diet, but they are picky little bastards, let me tell you. Then there’s all the human food recalls. We humans are pretty lucky in the sense that we have so many people out there that know how to fix all sorts of illnesses, including food-borne ones; but there are still risks; risks that people take every day.

A lot of the food that my family and I consume we have gathered ourselves. Venison, fish, crabs, etc. I think I prefer that over eating store bought meats all the time. — Now I want to move on a farm, again (I’ve wanted to since I was a kid.) I would love to live off my own land. — Not that it would solve every possible problem with food, but I think I would feel better knowing where my food came from, for one thing.

Anyway, I am starting to get off topic. The point is, there are dangers everywhere. Not exactly the most comforting of thoughts, but it is a thought that I think everyone out there should introduce to their brains.

This is Halloween.

I can’t believe Halloween is right around the corner. The months are really flying by, for me. I’m already half way through the semester. I had my Theater Midterm yesterday, actually. I think I did well.

But back to Halloween. I love it. It’s probably my favorite holiday, if I had to choose. There is something about it.

1. It’s the one holiday that’s generally best celebrated at night.
2. It’s the one time of the year where you can you can dress up, have fun, and not have people wondering if you are mentally handicapped.
3. Kids can go door to door and receive candy — I think this helps to bring people together, in a sense (I guess it makes, and always has made, me feel like the community I live in is open.)
4. Did I mention that I love the idea of haunted hayrides, houses, woods and corn mazes? (I’d love to go to a haunted place this year! — It’s been too long.)
5. There’s also something about Fall and being outside during this time of the year.

The last reason is probably the biggest reason that I like Halloween so much — the atmosphere. But when I think about, atmosphere pretty much covers everything I like about Halloween, doesn’t it?

Anyway, I really hope that I do something Halloween-ish this year. My mom mentioned that the Ladies Auxiliary at the Firehouse is having a Halloween party this Saturday. If I’m not hanging out with B this weekend I think I’ll go. And if I do go I’ll need a costume. I’m thinking something sexy this year. Last year I was GhostFace from Scream. Haha.

Verletzungen

Injuries love me. Especially lately. I can’t seem to avoid them!

1. Upon removing the stir fry that I heated from the microwave, I heard a loud POP sound followed by my right eye being greeted by a chunk of meat and steaming hot juice. I don’t cry when it comes to physical injuries, but I was damn close this time. That hurt. I was also scared because I seriously thought for a moment that I was going to go blind. I couldn’t open up my eye and it was just not a very nice feeling. My reactions were pretty quick, though, and I dashed to the sink and washed out my eye. This is the same eye that I almost went blind in as a child — cat scratched me right in the middle of it and I had to have a bunch of medicine put into my eye and then had to wear a patch for about a month, or so, to avoid infection/blindness — The swelling/redness went down after a while, but I did notice that my ptosisoriginally caused by Blackie, the cat from hell — was more severe for a while.

2. The other day, after making chicken nuggets, I decided to put them under the broiler in the oven to give them a nice crisp texture. I went to check on them and my oven mitt caught on fire. I shook the flame out immediately and then took off the oven mitt to find that I had a pretty nice burn on my thumb + some of the nail was scorched away. It could have been a lot worse. It’s actually all healed now… I am so thankful for the quickness of human reactions. I really am.

3. Today the other thumb must have been feeling left out and him and the knife I was cutting my bread with decided to align with each other — deeply align with each other — to make a nice cut. Thanks, guys! It was bleeding pretty badly, but seems to have stopped now. It’s one of those cuts that still has a flap of skin remaining, which help the healing a process, I think.
